WordPress Playground: Preview a Theme First

WordPress Playground runs a full WordPress site inside your browser, with no server and no hosting account. You can upload a theme ZIP, activate it, click through the pages and decide whether it is worth installing for real. Nothing you do there touches your live site, and the sandbox disappears when you close the tab. For a Lovable export, this is the fastest way to see what the converted theme actually looks like before you commit.

What WordPress Playground is

WordPress Playground is an official WordPress project that runs WordPress in the browser. PHP and the database are compiled to WebAssembly, so the whole stack loads as a web page. You open playground.wordpress.net and a fresh site appears in a few seconds.

Inside it you get a normal WordPress admin. Dashboard, Pages, Appearance, Settings, the Site Editor. You can upload themes and plugins, create pages, change the front page and edit templates.

The important part is that it is disposable. The site lives in your browser tab only. Reload and you get a clean install. Nothing is published, nothing is indexed, and no one else can see it.

Why preview a theme before installing it

Activating a new theme on a live site changes the front end immediately. If the theme is wrong, your visitors see the wrong thing while you fix it. A sandbox removes that risk.

A preview also answers questions faster than reading a feature list. You see the real header, the real spacing, the real fonts and the real colors on the real pages.

  • No hosting needed — you do not have to set up local WordPress or a staging subdomain first.
  • No cleanup — if the theme is bad, close the tab. There is no leftover theme folder or half-built page.
  • Safe experiments — delete a template part, break a pattern, try a plugin. Nothing is at stake.
  • Fast comparison — open two tabs with two themes and switch between them.

Preview a theme ZIP in Playground, step by step

The flow is the same as a normal WordPress install, because it is a normal WordPress install. You need the theme as a ZIP file on your computer.

  1. Open playground.wordpress.net and wait for the dashboard to finish loading.
  2. Go to Appearance → Themes → Add New → Upload Theme.
  3. Choose your theme ZIP, click Install Now, then Activate.
  4. Open the front end with the View site link or the house icon in the admin bar.
  5. Click through every page in the menu. Check the header, the footer and the mobile layout by narrowing the window.
  6. Open Appearance → Editor to inspect templates, template parts and the style settings the theme ships with.
  7. Check Settings → Reading to see which page is set as the front page.

What a Playground preview will and will not tell you

Playground is accurate about layout, typography, colors, block structure and the Site Editor experience. That covers most of what you want to judge in a theme.

It is less useful for anything that depends on a real server, a real domain or real traffic. Treat those as open questions to answer after you install the theme on a host.

  • Shows well: page layouts, spacing, fonts, color palette, navigation, patterns, templates and template parts, how editable the theme is in the Site Editor.
  • Shows roughly: performance. The browser sandbox is not a hosting benchmark, so do not read speed numbers from it.
  • Does not show: your live content, your plugins, your redirects, email delivery from forms, or anything tied to your domain and DNS.
  • Resets: everything, on reload. Export or note anything you want to keep before you close the tab.

Playground in the IQDesk converter

Our Lovable to WordPress converter uses Playground for exactly this reason. After a conversion, the review screen shows the generated WordPress site next to your original Lovable pages, both running in the browser. You do not install anything to judge the result.

From there you can give the AI fix agent instructions. It reads the source project, measures both pages and edits the theme, then the preview reloads with the change. Conversion, review and the theme download are free, and every account includes two free AI-fix attempts. See how it works for the full flow.

When you are happy, you download the theme ZIP and install it on your own WordPress: Appearance → Themes → Add New → Upload Theme → Activate. Pages are created on activation and the front page is set for you.

After the preview: moving to a real site

A sandbox decision is not a launch. Once the theme looks right, install it somewhere real, with your plugins and your content, before you point a domain at it.

Use a staging site or a fresh install first. In Settings → Reading, tick "Discourage search engines from indexing this site" while you work, and untick it before launch. Forgetting that checkbox is a common way to keep a finished site out of Google.

  1. Install the theme on a staging or fresh WordPress site and activate it.
  2. Add the plugins the theme expects, such as Contact Form 7 for forms or WooCommerce for products.
  3. Check every page against the original design, then fix spacing and text in the Site Editor.
  4. Set page slugs and the permalink structure under Settings → Permalinks.
  5. Fill in per-page titles and descriptions in your SEO plugin, then untick the indexing checkbox and go live.

Things Playground cannot fix

A preview tells you what a theme is, not what it should be. If parts of a Lovable app rely on React state, API calls, authentication or a Supabase backend, no static theme preview will contain them. Those are application features, and they need a developer or a plugin on the WordPress side.

The same applies to canvas, Lottie, iframes and third-party widgets. Our supported features page lists what converts, what is approximated and what is left out, so you know before you look at the preview.

For anything about Lovable itself that is not covered here, check Lovable's documentation. For Playground's own options and limits, the WordPress developer docs at developer.wordpress.org are the source to trust.

FAQ

Is WordPress Playground free?

Yes. WordPress Playground is an official WordPress project and runs for free in your browser at playground.wordpress.net. There is no account and no hosting cost, because the site runs on your own machine inside the tab.

Can I upload my own theme ZIP to WordPress Playground?

Yes. Go to Appearance, then Themes, then Add New, then Upload Theme, and pick the ZIP from your computer. Activate it and click through the front end exactly as you would on a hosted site.

Does anything I do in Playground affect my live site?

No. The sandbox is isolated in your browser and has no connection to any hosted WordPress install. When you reload or close the tab, the site is gone and nothing has changed anywhere else.

Do I need Playground to preview an IQDesk conversion?

No, we run it for you. The review screen in our converter shows the converted WordPress site next to your original Lovable pages inside Playground, in the browser. Conversion, review and the theme download are free.

Can I test plugins like WooCommerce in Playground?

Yes, you can install plugins in the sandbox the same way you install a theme. It is useful for checking that a theme's product or form layouts look right. Real payments, email delivery and anything tied to your domain still need a hosted site.
